Your Dental Fear Battle Plan
Whenever you are going into battle, it is best to have a plan. Here is your three-step plan to conquering your dental anxiety.
Prepare – Figure out what you are up against. By that we mean, what is causing your dental fear? Is it a bad childhood experience? What was being performed? Did the dentist listen to you? All of these questions need to be answered. Once you have figured out what you’re up against, then you can start to move forward. You may need to ask parents or other family members if you don’t remember the incident.
Make Your Battle Cry – Your battle cry is not really a battle cry, but more like a battle conversation. You need to talk to someone about what happened to you. This can be anyone you like, but make sure that they don’t suffer from dental fear as well. That is like an alcoholic going to a bartender for help staying sober. It won’t do you any good. Find someone who is comfortable at the dentist’s office, and talk over your experience. Ask them how their experience is at the dentist.
A great person to talk to is Dr. Morton. He will understand what you are saying regarding the previous treatment you’ve had, and he can help show you how it has changed over the years. The procedure that caused your pain may not even be in practice anymore, at least not here. Your comfort and dental health are our primary concerns, and we will show you there is nothing to be afraid of.
Get in the Fight – It’s now time to get in the game. This is the part where you take a real step toward getting past your dental anxiety: MAKE YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT. When you arrive at our office, you will really know there is nothing to be scared of. Dr. Morton and our caring staff will listen to you throughout your visit. Even if you just come in to talk over what you want and need, that is enough. Get into the office, get comfortable, and get your mouth back to the healthy place it should be at.

Sedation – Sedation dentistry is a common request for people who suffer from dental anxiety. Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is the mildest, most common sedation available. You will be conscious but in a state of relaxation during your procedure. Nitrous is given to you while you are in the chair to take the edge off of your nerves, and it wears off quickly following the procedure. This means no foggy feeling following your treatment, and no need for someone to drive you home.
Another form of sedation we offer at Mint 32 Dentistry is oral sedation. This can give you a mild to moderate sedative effect. Unlike with nitrous, you will more heavily sedated, and it will last longer following your procedure. Oral sedation is taken in pill form, and your body will need several hours to process the medication out of your system. This moderate level of sedation will leave you on the edge of sleep, and you may even fall asleep. You can be awakened easily, however. For this type of sedation, you will need to have someone available to give you a ride home.
Office Comfort – Our office is equipped with many different comfort options to help you feel at ease while you are with us. We have a beverage bar, blankets, pillows, and TVs in each room. You can sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee or tea, and watch a show while you wait for your treatment to begin.
