Do you find yourself waking up constantly at night? Has your snoring reached a level that keeps your family up? Are you tired all the time, no matter how long you sleep? You may be suffering from a sleeping disorder called sleep apnea. Mint 32 Dentistry can help you work through this disorder so you can get the rest you need.
What Is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a disorder characterized by pauses in breathing or periods of shallow breath during sleep. The main symptom of sleep apnea is chronic snoring. The airway repeatedly becomes blocked, limiting the amount of air that reaches your lungs. When this happens, you may snore loudly or make choking noises as you breathe. Your brain and body becomes deprived of oxygen, prompting you to wake up. This can happen a few times a night, or in severe cases, hundreds of times a night.
How Can Dr. Morton Help Me?
There are several solutions that Dr. Morton and the Mint 32 Dentistry team can provide to help you get a restful night of sleep.
- Home Sleep Study – Before treatment can begin, a sleep study is conducted to diagnose your condition and the severity of it. Once the study is complete, the results will be sent to a sleep physician to determine the presence and level of your sleep apnea. If the physician confirms the diagnosis, Dr. Morton will present options for treating your sleep apnea.
- Mouthguards – A custom mouthguard helps keep your airway clear while you sleep. This is the first level of treatment available for sleep apnea. Dr. Morton will go over the results of your sleep study and the recommendations from the physician to determine the correct treatment for your condition.
- Sleep Appliance – This is a similar treatment to a mouthguard. It supports the jaw in a forward position to help maintain an open upper airway. Dr. Morton will explain the difference in treatments and which ones may help resolve sleep apnea
