Why Are Dental Cleanings and Dental Exams So Important?

Depending upon the patient's needs, when a new patient comes in we start off by just getting to know them, both with an interview process, a tour of the office, just allow them to get familiar with us as well. Then we just have a conversation with them, allow them to guide us as to what their past experiences were, where they want to go, what kind of care they received, as well as what kind of care they're hoping to receive moving forward. Once we've built that rapport with them and they with us, then we move through our examination process. In the exam we'll do many of the things that they've had done in the past, look at teeth for cavities and look at their gums. We also take their blood pressure, oftentimes many offices don't do that, but it's a critical piece of information as to the overall health of the patient.

We'll look at their airway, if they present with signs that indicate they may have a breathing problem, especially a sleep disordered breathing. Then just functionality, whether the joint and the bite are in harmony. Whether there's any evidence or sign of functional problems. Lastly we'll ask them just how happy are they with their smile. Simple things like that, just again allow them to guide us as to what they're looking for. One of the things that comes across often is patients don't always know what's available to them today, they've just kind of been given advice or guidance based on older technologies and older processes. By spending a lot of time with the patient in the beginning, allowing them to see what's possible, oftentimes they're able to start asking questions about things they did not know about.

Once we finish with the examination process then they'll also meet with the hygienist. The hygienist will go through and make sure that the gums are healthy, and just provide some information and feedback based on the findings in that regard. Ultimately the goal is to lower the patient's inflammatory response and allow them to get healthy through our hygiene department.

Waiting until you know there is a problem before you go to the dentist is not a good approach. Many conditions, like gum disease and abscesses, have mild symptoms at the beginning. By the time you realize you have these problems, there has already been damage done to your mouth. This is the biggest reason that it is important to attend regular dental exams and dental cleanings with a dentist. These appointments are the times that Dr. Morton can look over your entire mouth for any warning signs. He has been highly trained to identify symptoms that you may overlook. Early detection is the key to effectively treating many dental problems, and in some cases (oral cancer, for example) may make all the difference in your overall health.

No matter who you are, your dental hygiene is not perfect. That is why we pair our dental exams with thorough dental cleanings. We are able to clean the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth where plaque and tartar like to hide. Let Dr. Morton help you identify any warning signs, get your teeth clean, and get you on the road to a high level of dental health today in Mint 32 Dentistry in Alpharetta, GA.

What Will My Appointment Be Like?

There are two main steps to your dental exams and cleaning appointment. If you are a new patient, your time with us will start by filling out your new patient forms. These forms are available for download, so you can fill them out before you get in Mint 32 Dentistry in Alpharetta, GA and just relax in our lobby until your appointment begins.

  • Step #1 – Your appointment will begin with a dental hygienist taking digital X-rays as well as a full set of diagnostic photos. These will give us a clear picture of the state of your mouth and will be the benchmark for any needed treatment. From there, the hygienist will thoroughly clean and examine your teeth, noting any area of concern for Dr. Morton during this time.
  • Step #2 – Dr. Morton will come in after your teeth cleaning is complete. He will look over your teeth and examine the X-rays for any hints of developing issues. He will also screen you for oral cancer using our VELscope tool. This is simply a wellness test and should not worry you. Catching any sign of cancer early is key in defeating this disease. If Dr. Morton finds any problems, he will formulate a treatment plan to meet your needs. He will go over this plan with you, and you will both work out exactly how to beat whatever issue you have. If you are a new patient, you will also receive a welcome goodie bag at the end of your time with us.
